Cobaw Ridge's Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Lagrein

Tasting Notes : Cellar Door New Releases 22/12/2011

2010 Cobaw Ridge Chardonnay

This fine, focussed and expressive example of our Chardonnay was totally barrel fermented. It fully displays our characteristic mineral focus, together with great floral lift and tight natural acidity.

2010 l'altra

The wine that really got me thrumming, though, was a special, 2010 chardonnay quite unlike the standard bottling: fermented and matured in stainless steel tanks, this chardy had nothing added or taken away (no added yeast or acid; neither clarified nor filtered) and had the bare minimum of sulphur dioxide preservative added before bottling. The result is a chardonnay with extraordinarily vibrant aromatic complexity - flaky Weet-Bix; lemon pith - and the most amazing, lively, grapefruit pulpy texture and length of flavour in the mouth.’ Max Allen    THE WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN  APLUS

2010 Cobaw Ridge Pinot Noir

‘is amazingly fine, powdery and restrained, with just a hint of regional mintiness.’ Max Allen : THE WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN  APLUS

2007 Cobaw Ridge Syrah

Pepper spice and all things nice!! Super concentrated but with cool climate balance. Natural acidity to the fore so as to allow the complex, suave, elegant and floral palate to shine.
Decant 2 hrs prior to serving.

GOLD Ballarat Wine Show 2009

2007 Cobaw Ridge Syrah: This cool climate syrah (fermented with a dollop of viognier grapes) treads a fine line between thrilling spice and deep, silky, curranty fruit.
It will build amazing complexity after five to 10 years cellaring. Drink with: pepper steak.
Max Allen : Gourmet Traveller. August  2011

Fine deep, still youthful colour. Opening nose dominated by white pepper (Macedon marker? I recall this on Pat Carmody’s wines) with a lifted dimension probably reflecting the Viognier component.  Ripe fruit, firm but suave tannins; touch of (attractive) bitterness; great concentration and fine length. A splendid, harmonious wine – plenty of depth but under-stated (a highly desirable quality in my book).  No rough edges and (hip hooray!) the fruit is the key player; any wood is firmly in the background. This will be even better in a few years time.  All-in-all, an elegant, balanced, hand-crafted wine with plenty more to give.

2008 Cobaw Ridge Lagrein

An obscure varietal originally hailing from the very north east of Italy.Varietally expressive with abundant savoury and mineral traits, together with dark cherries, spice and liquorice. Fine lifted floral nose and super supple with great length.

2006 Cobaw Ridge Syrah ( Limited )
Super Stuff. Dark cherries, mulch, spiced blackberries - it's a lovely parade. This is very much in the cool-climate, spicy mould, but it's integrated, balanced, sophisticated and appealing. Drink: 2011-2017.  94  / 100. The Wine Front: Campbell Mattinson.

GOLD Medallist at Victorian Wine Show.

Cobaw Ridge Shiraz 2006 Syrah (Macedon Ranges) – bright ruby with a white peppery lifted nose with spicy, fresh liquorice-edged red berry and cherry fruits beneath.  In the mouth, a silky mid-palate is very cherry, red cherry, with anchoring with white and meatier black pepper grunt to the finish; violets make for a delicate counterpoint.  Lovely intensity, balance, mouthfeel and length. Very good.

Lagrein

Lagrein - A Rising Star

  • ... Lagrein wines belong to the most awarded reds in Italy and can compete with premium products from other nations as well.
  • Wolfgang Kager, Cantina Bolzano.

Lagrein is almost unknown in Australia, the variety originates from Sud Tyrol - Alto Adige in the far-north east of Italy. Cobaw Ridge in the Macedon Ranges produced the first commercial quantities in Australia.

Lagrein - a new winegrape variety for Australia

Cobaw Ridge held a tasting of their wine and 15 Lagreins from Italy's best producers, also noted to be the largest tasting of its kind outside of Europe in the Southern hemisphere.

Here's what James Halliday had to say:

"Several things emerged: first, the aroma and flavour of the Cobaw Ridge wines is utterly typical of the variety. Second, the grape has emphatic character, which binds the wines of both countries into a coherent, tightly knit group... it is also abundantly clear the wines have a long cellaring potential.

The '99 Cobaw Ridge is still a bright purple-red, and looks every bit as youthful as the 2002. How long the vivid fruit aromas and flavours - raspberry, cherry, plum, will take to subside is anyone's guess. Having initially had a few doubts about the legitimacy of the variety - was it just a novelty or was it really worthy of attention - I am now a convert to the cause."

"I am now a convert to the cause."

Quotes from previous Cobaw Ridge Lagrein vintages:

"2003 Cobaw Ridge Lagrein -- The obscure red lagrein grape originated in Italy's north - east and is planted in a few Australian vineyards – but none yet matches the quality of the lagrein from this Macedon Ranges producer. Seductive, crisp, perfumed with violets and cherries this exceptionally well-balance, fine, medium-bodied red wine is a real beauty."
-- Max Allen, 'Taste', Weekend Australian, February 5-6 2005

"Cobaw Ridge in the Macedon Ranges has pioneered the grape variety in Australia and has had considerable success with it: 2003 Cobaw Ridge Lagrein "A much more serious offering from considerably older vines... Vigneron Alan Cooper has crafted a much richer wine..., full of blood plum, mint, black cherry, red rose and dusty oak off in the background. Crystal clear palate showing great clarity of saturated fruit and a driving backbone of herbal acidity and very fine tannins on the finish. Great definition and balance. A terrific wine, to be enjoyed with or without food, that will age over the medium term."
-- Andrew Wood, DIVINE Food & Wine, Issue 39 March/May 2005
